The Importance Of Sleeping Directions In Vastu

sleeping-direction

Sleeping directions can change the way we sleep and the way we live. They have a profound effect on our energy levels, focus and performance amongst other important factors relating to both mind and body.

Restful sleep is as important as healthy food for optimal brain and body performance. Sleep deprivation can have a terrible effect on both body and mind, leading to poor performance at work, impaired judgment, lack of concentration and focus, irritability, loss of memory, and depression. These are just some of the effects of sleep deprivation. Over time, lack of proper, restful sleep can slowly erode your confidence, strength, and critical thinking abilities.

There are quite a few factors that affect our sleeping pattern. Our age, lifestyle, diet, environment, the mattress, etc. are all factors that influence our sleeping patterns. One of the crucial factors that most people ignore are sleeping directions.

You might consider sleeping direction as an insignificant factor to worry about. Think again, small things matter, and from the above-mentioned paragraphs, you now know the consequences of poor sleep. So, what’s the ideal sleeping direction? Should you avoid certain positions? If so, why?

The Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of architecture places great importance on sleeping directions.

Important Note: The following head directions are only valid for the northern hemisphere. If you live on the Southern hemisphere, the opposite apply.

Head Pointing Towards the North: The Worst Sleeping Direction (Never)

Why not sleep in this direction? Geography, Physics, and Biology – all three sciences have a role to play in varying degrees.

It’s a known fact that our planet – Earth – itself is a giant magnet with a magnetic field strong enough to shield us from the dangerous radiation from the Sun. Naturally; the magnetic field is the strongest at the poles. Furthermore, even though the iron in our blood isn’t ferromagnetic, it’s believed, that the earth’s magnetic field has influence, albeit, minor, over the blood flow in our body. Similarly, you need to bear in mind, that the blood vessels that carry blood to the brain are a lot narrower than the others. So, even the slightest change in blood flow could impact blood pressure, mood, and of course, sleep.

People who regularly sleep with the head pointing towards the north may experience sleep disturbances, bad dreams, and unrestful sleep.

Head Pointing Towards the South: The Ideal Sleeping Direction

According to Vastu Shastra, sleeping with the head towards the south is ideal. The ancient science promises wealth, happiness, and success to people who adopt this direction. In truth, the text means to say that whoever adopts this direction will enjoy sound, restful sleep, which would make the person more alert, energetic, relaxed, focused, motivated and productive, thus enabling them to pursue their goals during the day. Such traits and qualities are often seen in happy, successful, and wealthy people.

Head Pointing Towards the East: The Right Direction for Power Sleep – Preferable for Students

Placing your head in the east direction is the ideal position for peaceful and restful sleep. Vastu experts recommend this direction to students as it has the potential to improve memory and concentration. A longer REM sleep helps consolidation and storage of information, which means better memory; a good night’s sleep ensures better concentration.

Head Pointing Towards the West: The Direction of Success – For a Successful You

The head towards the west isn’t as beneficial as the southern and eastern directions. Sleeping towards the west may make you experience a positive change in your professional or entrepreneurial life. You will enjoy peaceful sleep and a productive day. It will help you shun negativity and have a positive outlook towards life.

Remember the sleeping positions mentioned are only valid for the northern hemisphere; the opposite apply if you live in the southern hemisphere.

On what side to sleep: Left or Right?

Ideally, you should always sleep facing the right, which exerts minimum pressure on the heart. Our ancestors were not doctors or engineers, but they were wise and understood how small changes in everyday habits could help a person sleep better and live healthier.

A Japanese centenarian was once asked his secret of longevity. He gave the reporters three simple rules for a long and healthy life. His third point took everyone by surprise; he advised everyone to never sleep on their left side (i.e.) face towards the left. Something similar is mentioned in Vastu Shastra. Sleep with the face towards the right or as soon as you wake up, roll over to the right, and then sit up – this will put minimal pressure on the heart.

Three things to do every morning that will empower your day

After many hours of sleep, your body and its constituents would be in the most relaxed state. You might be ready to bid adieu to the bed, but the nerves and muscles will surely crave for more bedtime. The best way to activate the nerves, muscles and the body is to follow a simple morning ritual.

As soon as you wake up, sit up on the bed and rub your palms together for a few seconds and place your palms upon your closed eyes. The palms of the hands and the soles of the feet are full of nerve endings that connect to various muscles, organs, and parts of the body. Rubbing the hands together will not only activate the nerves but the whole body.

The second thing to do before you get out of bed, is to breathe in deeply from the navel to ensure a sudden stream of thoughts to your brain doesn’t make your breathing shallow and from the lungs. Close your eyes, concentrate on the navel and expand your navel with every inhalation. The breath should remain deep and long. Do this for a few minutes.

The last thing to do, is to try and remember your dreams. As soon as you remember anything you have dreamt, right it down on a dream diary. Dreams are window to the subconscious mind and often represent unconscious desires, repressions and experiences which have a profound effect on our personality and day to day activities. By remembering dreams and understanding them, we often clear many of these repressions, which are often negative.

You shouldn’t have to rely on a cup of tea of coffee to shake off sleepiness and activate your body. This simple morning ritual that our forefathers recommend will do a far better job supercharging your day.
